Unbonding: getting your delegation back

When you undelegate, your money is locked for the pool's unbonding period before it returns to your available balance.

Unbonding is a wait the blockchain network itself imposes between leaving a validator and being free of it. It exists so the network can still penalise misbehaviour that happened just before you left. Sentinel does not add to it and cannot shorten it.

How it works

  1. Step 1: Choose to undelegate on one of your positions, for part of it or all of it.
  2. Step 2: That amount moves out of your delegation into unbonding straight away. It stops earning from that moment.
  3. Step 3: When the pool's unbonding period ends, it is released to your available balance automatically, usually within a few minutes.
  4. Step 4: From there you can withdraw it or delegate it again.

How long it takes

Each pool has its own unbonding period, set by its network and shown on the pool's page before you delegate. Across our pools it is currently 0 to 30 days. Once you have asked to undelegate, the request cannot be cancelled or sped up.

Worth knowing

  • Whatever you leave in the pool keeps earning. It has to stay at or above the pool's minimum delegation; below that, undelegate the whole position instead.
  • Undelegating again restarts the wait. If you undelegate more from a position while an earlier amount is still unbonding, the newest request sets the release date for all of it.
  • Unbonding money is still yours, and still counted in our proof of reserves, but it cannot be withdrawn, moved or delegated until it is released.
  • Rewards you have already been paid are not affected. They sit in your rewards balance and can be withdrawn.
